Affirmative Actions

Last Updated: Sunday, 29 September 2024 20:17 | Hits: 1070

Affirmative actions can be outlined as public policies that promote the integration of historically excluded social groups. Certainly, they are important in preventing inequalities from leading to social disparities. Several graduate programs at CEFET/RJ, including the Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering (PPEEL), implement affirmative action criteria in their selection notices.

The PPEEL notice establishes affirmative actions for the selection process of incoming students with the aim of promoting social inclusion and diversity among candidates. These actions were introduced in 2022. The main affirmative actions mentioned include:

  • Ethnic-Racial Quotas: 50% of the seats are reserved for candidates who self-declare as indigenous, Black, or mixed race. These candidates must make this choice during registration, opting to apply through the ethnic-racial quota system.

  • Quotas for People with Disabilities: 10% of the seats are reserved for people with disabilities. Candidates wishing to apply for these seats must provide a medical report proving the disability, including details such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code and the probable cause of the disability.

  • Redistribution of Seats: The seats reserved for ethnic-racial quotas and people with disabilities that are not filled may be transferred to the general pool. All candidates will compete based on their final score in the selection process.

These affirmative actions aim to ensure a more inclusive and representative selection process, promoting diversity within the program. More information about the selection process: https://dippg.cefet-rj.br/ppeel/index.php/processo-seletivo

It is important to note that CEFET/RJ is part of the Undergraduate Student Agreement Program (PEC-G), officially created in 1965 by Protocol No. 55.613, and is currently governed by Interministerial Ordinance MEC/MRE No. 7, dated June 4, 2024. This ordinance regulates the operationalization of the Student-Agreement Program in the Undergraduate modality (PEC-G) and the Portuguese as a Foreign Language modality (PEC-PLE). This program aims to provide the opportunity for higher education in Brazilian institutions to students from developing countries with which Brazil maintains an educational, cultural, or scientific-technological agreement. PPEEL has accepted a student from PEC-G:

Other important data to be mentioned are:

  • Women admitted in the selection process:
    • 2020: 5
    • 2021: 5
    • 2022: 1
    • 2023: 0
    • 2024: 2

It is important to note that more affirmative actions are needed to attract women to postgraduate programs. Thus, faculty members are involved in actions to reduce this inequality:

  1. Support Project:

    • FAPERJ Call No. 09/2021, "Girls and Women in Exact and Earth Sciences, Engineering, and Computing" Program, June 2021 - Participation by Professor Milena Faria Pinto (PPEEL) and coordinated by Professor Rafaelli de Carvalho Coutinho.
  2. Involvement of PPEEL faculty with the IEEE branch, especially with the Women in Engineering (WIE) extension:

  3. PPEEL has also held lectures to disseminate knowledge and bring the community closer to Electrical Engineering topics:
