Laboratories

The Graduate Program in Ethnic-Racial Relations (PPRER) has four associated laboratories, namely: a) the Núcleo de Estudos Afro-brasileiros (Center for Afro-Brazilian Studies - NEAB); b) the Observatório de Histórias, Culturas, Artes e Literaturas Indígenas (Observatory of Histories, Cultures, Arts, and Indigenous Literatures - OHCALI); c) the Laboratório de História da Ciência (History of Science Laboratory - LHC); and d) the Observatório de Populações com Direitos Ameaçados (Observatory of Populations with Threatened Rights - OPDA).

  1. a) NEAB is, today, one of the more than eighty groups of Afro-Brazilian studies existing in public institutions of Higher Education in Brazil and is linked to them through the Consórcio Nacional dos Núcleos de Estudos Afro-Brasileiros (National Consortium of Centers for Afro-Brazilian Studies - CONNEABs), also being part of Associação Brasileira de Pesquisadores(as) Negros(as) (Brazilian Association of Black Researchers) - ABPN. Since its creation, NEAB has taken on the institutional role of promoting training in the field of ethnic-racial relations, of stimulating the production of knowledge and of promoting actions that contribute to the recognition, rescue and historical appreciation of African peoples and Afro-descendants through studies of black identity and culture. In addition, NEAB has been advising several directorates and sectors of the institution in the formulation, execution, and management of public policies, contributing to the strengthening, creation and implementation of guidelines, goals and actions focused on overcoming the different forms of ethnic-racial discrimination and in promoting equity.

  1. b) OHCALI is an autonomous observatory, however, like NEAB, it is associated with PPRER, helping to overcome different forms of ethnic-racial discrimination, and contributing to the management of institutional public policies aimed at promoting ethnic-racial equity. While a significant part of the country's higher education institutions and federal technological education institutes have their respective NEABIs (Núcleos de Estudos e Pesquisas Afro-brasileiros e Indígenas (Center for Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous Studies and Researches)), the justification for the creation of OHCALI resides in the need for greater identity representation of the original populations (indigenous peoples of different ethnicities, caiçaras, riparian inhabitants, among other denominations). So that the indigenous theme is not subordinate to the studies of ethnic-racial relations on the black population, OHCALI develops autonomously - while still talking to NEAB – studies and teaching, research, and extension actions in order to give visibility and protagonism to indigenous knowledge and traditions and to promote the dissemination, production and exchange of ideas, dialogues and experiences.

  1. c) The History of Science Laboratory (LHC), which is also linked to the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência, Tecnologia e Educação (Graduate Program in Science, Technology and Education - PPCTE) of CEFET/RJ, aims to transform academic research into educational videos destined to basic education and made available on the YouTube video sharing platform, in the LHC account. Recently, the LHC was contemplated by the public notice for Apoio à Difusão e Popularização da Ciência e Tecnologia no Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Support for the Diffusion and Popularization of Science and Technology in the State of Rio de Janeiro), from the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Research Support Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro - FAPERJ), and nine video documentaries about the city of Rio do Janeiro were produced, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which addressed the topics of science, leisure and education. Within these themes, the issue of poverty and the marginalization of black people in post-abolitionism stands out, as well as the assistance spaces for this population contingent.

  1. d) The Observatory of Populations with Threatened Rights (OPDA) brings together researchers linked to the PPRER, the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências da Computação (Graduate Program in Computer Science - PPCIC) and the Programa de Pós-Graduação em em Engenharia de Produção e Sistemas (Graduate Program in Production and Systems Engineering - PPPRO). OPDA aims to provide with qualified information possible public policies focused on the issue of refugees in Brazil and more specifically in the city of Rio de Janeiro; encourage, through an analysis based on Human Rights, the effective insertion of the refuge theme, in the national political agenda; and make scientifically relevant content available to scholars and researchers. It has a partnership with Cáritas Brasileira, Sesc Nacional, Cátedra Sérgio Vieira de Mello do Alto Comissariado das Nações Unidas para os Refugiados (Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees - ACNUR).

All laboratories include students of undergraduate, graduate, and secondary education with a technical specialization from CEFET/RJ, as well as teachers, researchers, administrative technicians from CEFET/RJ and other institutions (UERJ, FIOCRUZ, UFF, UFRJ). Interdisciplinarity, circulation and democratization of knowledge form the structuring axis of these spaces.
