Titulo: STUDY OF CDM AND FBG BASED OPTICAL SENSOR FOR SALINITY AND TEMPERATURE SIMULTANEOUS MEASUREMENT

Aluna: Tanushree Selokar

Abstract: Fiber optical sensors have been used for a large area of applications, which includes monitoring physical variables as bending, temperature, refractive index and stress, among others. In this work, the multimodal interference (MMI) technique has been studied as an optical sensor. The basic device is a combination of a singlemode fiber - multimode fiber - singlemode fiber, in a structure called SMS configuration which is also called Core Diameter Mismatch (CDM) structure. The light signal is monitored in the SMS structure output. Inside the MMF segment the signal modes interfere with each other. The length of the MMF segment is the necessary to obtain the light out of the MMF using the self-image principle, where the constructive interferences of the light waves among the several guided modes lead to a copy of the input signal light. The last SMF segment drives the light out of the sensor structure. Variations of the SMS structure will also be analyzed such as singlemode fiber - multimode fiber - singlemode fiber - multimode fiber - singlemode fiber (SMSMS) and singlemode fiber - multimode fiber1 - multimode fiber2 - singlemode fiber (SM1M2S) structures. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and long period grating (LPG) will also be studied.
The aim of this work is to develop a theoretical analysis and experimental characterization of the SMS structure (and its variations) with an FBG or LPG as a
salinity and temperature simultaneous sensor.
